MedStar national winner earns GEM award

Joan Insalaco Warren, RN-BC, PhD, NEA-BC, director of nursing research, MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center, Baltimore, was presented with the 2013 national GEM award at her facility on Dec. 2.

“I am honored to be here and have the opportunity to recognize Joan as a true nurse of excellence,” said Eileen P. Williamson, RN, MSN, senior vice president and CNE.

Williamson surprised Insalaco Warren with an engraved crystal GEM award and a framed cover featuring her as the winner in the Education and Mentorship category.

As a hospital-based nurse scientist and administrator overseeing nursing peer review, evidence-based practice and the nursing research committee, Insalaco Warren has successfully led in the establishment of programs for nurses at two system hospitals and has garnered more than $2.6 million in grant funding for professional workforce development, Williamson said during the reception where colleagues gathered to join in the celebration.

Williamson also presented Larry Strassner, RN, PhD, FACHE, NEA-BC, vice president, patient care services and CNO, with a hospital plaque recognizing MedStar Franklin Square as home to a GEM national winner.

Insalaco Warren said the GEM award will drive her to continue to strive for excellence and continue to help nurses in their learning, growth and career advancement.

“I am overwhelmed by this outpouring from my colleagues, and I thank them for helping me to achieve this award that means so much to me,” she said.
