Lopez sets goals to accomplish as St. David’s South Austin’s new associate CNO

St. David’s South Austin Medical Center named Michael A. Lopez, RN, BSN, MBA, CEN, as its new associate CNO. In this role, Lopez will work with the nursing administrative team, under the leadership of Sally Gillam, RN, BSN, MAHS, CNO.

“I became a nurse because I love working with people, and it provides me the opportunity to create a positive impact on people’s lives,” Lopez said in an email to “I have always wanted to be a nurse leader who can be involved in collaborative partnerships, which improve the quality of patient care and help create a positive impact on patient hospital experiences.”

Lopez began his management career at Las Colinas Medical Center in Irving, Texas, in 2003. He became manager of the cardiac catheterization laboratory in 2007 and the director of emergency services in 2009. In 2010, he he was named the administrative director of invasive cardiovascular services, emergency services, interventional radiology and pharmacy.

Lopez assisted in the development of the interventional cardiac, stroke and STEMI service lines and helped lead the ED to a consistent decrease in overall turnaround times, according to a news release. In 2011, Lopez was included on “The Great 100 Nurses of Dallas Fort Worth” list.

Lopez is a member of the American College of Health Care Executives, Emergency Nurses Association, American Association of Critical-Care Nurses, Texas Organization of Nurse Executives, Central Texas Chapter of TONE and an Alumni of North Texas Emerging Leaders Program. “One of my most important goals is to provide an ongoing positive energy to my team members and to create an environment, which enables my team to deliver high-quality patient care to the community we serve,” he said. “I believe all Texas nurses should strive to be clinically competent, accountable and compassionate, and we should utilize evidence-based practices to guide the delivery of quality care.”
