I live in Wisconsin and there are not of jobs open for ADNs. I am willing to relocate. Do you have any suggestions?

Question:

Dear Donna,

I live in Wisconsin and there are no jobs open for ADNs. I am willing to relocate. Do you have any suggestions?

Willing to Relocate

Dear Donna responds:

Dear Willing to Relocate,

The hospital job market is shrinking as care shifts out of the acute care environment into alternate inpatient settings, ambulatory care settings, the community and the home. Read “New nurse, new job strategies” (www.Nurse.com/Cardillo/Strategies www.Nurse.com/Cardillo/Strategies).

That being said, there seem to be more hospital opportunities in certain parts of the country than others, especially some Southern states. Although you may run into the same barriers having an ADN, start making some inquiries. Use the job search feature on Nurse.com and enter keywords such as “New nurse positions,” “new nurse residency program,” and “new graduate.” Also, do a general internet search for same terms, and start applying to any positions of interest to you.

It’s important to note that the entire healthcare landscape is changing. While new nurses once were told told they must get hospital experience before moving elsewhere, that advice is no longer relevant or practical. So if you have interest in other specialties such as psychiatric nursing, public health and so on, go for it.

New and experienced nurses alike need to look in new directions for employment and need new skills get jobs, and putting the suggestions in the above-referenced article to work for you will help you do so. Your career may not start out how and where you envisioned it would, but it is important to get started somewhere.

Best wishes,
Donna
