The Lucy Sandoval Memorial Endowed Nursing Scholarship has been set up in memory of Lucy Montes-Sandoval, RN, CNS, PhD, a nursing instructor at New Mexico State Universitys Doña Ana Community College, Las Cruces.
Montes-Sandoval, 53, suffered severe head injuries Jan. 17 when she was struck by a car, according to a spokesperson from the campus police department. Montes-Sandoval died from her injuries Jan. 25.
Whats particularly moving about this scholarship is that it is a memorial, said Jennifer Cervantes, assistant dean for advancement in NMSUs College of Health and Social Services. There were a lot of students moved after her sudden death, and they wanted to do something to honor her memory.
The scholarship, which was started in September, has up to five years to reach the $15,000 level, at which time the first scholarship will be awarded to a student, according to Cervantes. If more money can be raised, theres the chance to award more scholarships, she said.
The idea for this scholarship came from Brittany Barham, RN, a DACC nursing transfer student to NMSU School of Nursing, who graduated in May. Barhams close ties with and respect for Montes-Sandoval inspired her to create a memorial that would benefit nursing students.
Lucy Montes-Sandovals abiding concern for the welfare of students has always been her defining mark, Earl Nissen, an educator and retired professor from DACC, said in a statement provided by NMSU. Nursing students will remember Lucys compassion and learn of her life [through] this endowed scholarship for many years to come.
