I would like to work in hospice but have no experience in this field. I have a BSN and worked many years in a med/surg ICU. Can I transition to hospice work with my background?

Dear Future Hospice Nurse,
You are well suited to work in hospice with your clinical experience and credentials. Start contacting some hospice agencies/facilities about employment. They regularly train nurses like you to work in the specialty.

You can find hospice nurses by asking around and by contacting the Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association (www.hpna.org). If they have local chapter meetings in your area, you can go out to those meetings as a guest for now. This is also a good way to learn more about the specialty and to start networking.
