The legacy of Bare Root, Inc. will live on through the formation of the Nurses Float Scholarship Fund with funds remaining from the Nurses Float, which appeared in the 2013 Rose Parade. This endowed national scholarship will be awarded through the Association of California Nurse Leaders.
A $5,000 scholarship will be awarded annually to a RN pursuing either an ADN-to-BSN or BSN-to-MSN degree. Applicants do not need to be a resident of California or a member of ACNL. Applications will be available through Nov. 22.
It gives us great joy to be able to continue to pay it forward by creating a scholarship with remaining funds that were so generously donated by our friends and peers across the country who supported the Nurses Float, Monica Weisbrich, RN, BSN, president of Bare Root, said in a news release. We believe that ACNL is committed to promoting education and truly champions the advancement of quality healthcare and practice. It was a perfect fit to work with them to make this scholarship fund a reality.
Five nurses in Southern California dreamed up the idea for the Nurses Float after learning that Sally Bixby, RN, would be president of the Tournament of Roses leading up to the 2013 parade. The group Weisbrich; Judy Dahle, RN, MS, MSG; Paul Wafer, RN, MBA; Pat Spongberg, RN, BSN, CNOR (E); and Suzanne Ward, RN, MA, MN, CNOR (E), GC-C formed the nonprofit group Bare Root, Inc in 2007. These five nurses sought to honor nurses worldwide, showcasing the unique characteristics of nurses through the nature-themed float, A Healing Place. Bare Root raised more than $400,000 to build the float and had enough left over to fund the annual scholarship.
Nurses across the nation felt a sense of pride as we watched the beautiful float honoring nursings contributions to the health of our communities during the Rose Parade, ACNL CEO Patricia McFarland, RN, MS, FAAN, said in the news release. It is our privilege to continue the vision of the great nurse leaders from Bare Root by administering the Nurses Float Scholarship Fund. This scholarship reinforces ACNLs commitment to lifelong learning to improve healthcare for all.
