South Nassau cancer center earns national achievement honor

South Nassau Communities Hospital’s Gertrude & Louis Feil Cancer Center in Valley Stream, N.Y,, has been named a recipient of the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer Outstanding Achievement Award.

South Nassau is one of seven hospitals in New York and 84 in the United States to receive the award in the past year, according to a news release.

“We are pleased to earn this prestigious award,” Richard J. Murphy, president and CEO of South Nassau, said in the release. “At the same time, we understand that the ultimate reward for us is to fulfill the communities’ needs for compassionate, patient-centered, standard-setting healthcare services. So we will not relent in taking all actions necessary to ensure our patients have access to a cancer program that combines experienced oncologists with leading-edge medical and surgical cancer treatment technologies.”

According to the release, the center treats about 1,500 patients annually. It incorporates South Nassau’s Center for Lung Health, radiation oncology department and surgical oncology department in Oceanside and Valley Stream; the GYN oncology department in Valley Stream; and the Long Island Gamma Knife Center, Center for Prostate Health program, Center for Breast Health, PET/CT service and Complete Women’s Imaging Center in Oceanside.

Established in 2004, the CoC Outstanding Achievement Award is designed to recognize cancer programs that achieve excellence in providing quality care to cancer patients. A facility receives the award after an on-site evaluation by a physician surveyor, during which time the facility demonstrates a level of compliance with seven standards that represent the full scope of the cancer program: cancer committee leadership, cancer data management, clinical services, research, community outreach, quality improvement and outcomes reporting.
