Hunterdon Medical Center program earns American Diabetes Association honor

Hunterdon Medical Center’s Center for Nutrition and Diabetes Management, Flemington, N.J., has been awarded the American Diabetes Association Education Recognition Certificate for its diabetes self-management education program.

The Center for Nutrition and Diabetes Management originally was recognized in 1992. The ADA recognized the program for offering high-quality education, an essential component of effective diabetes treatment.

The ADA’s Education Recognition Certificate assures that educational programs meet the National Standards for Diabetes Self-Management Education Programs.

The ADA’s standards were developed and tested under the auspices of the National Diabetes Advisory Board in 1983 and were revised by the diabetes community in 1994, 2000 and 2007.

Programs voluntarily apply for recognition, which is awarded for three years.
“The process gives professionals a national standard by which to measure the quality of services they provide,” Beverley Manganelli, RD, director, Center for Nutrition and Diabetes Management, said in a news release. “And of course, it assures the consumer that he or she will likely receive high-quality service.”

According to the ADA, there are currently 25.8 million people, or 8.3% of the U.S. population, who have diabetes.

While an estimated 18.8 million have been diagnosed with diabetes, about 7 million people are not aware that they have the disease.

Many first will learn they have diabetes when they are treated for one of its life-threatening complications – heart disease and stroke, kidney disease, blindness and nerve disease and amputation, according to the ADA, which reports approximately 1.9 million new cases of diabetes were diagnosed in people ages 20 or older in 2010.
