Chicago nurse earns 2013 Champion of Quality award

The American Health Care Association named Vivian Tellis-Nayak, PhD, and Mary Tellis-Nayak, RN, MSN, MPH, the 2013 recipients of the Mary K. Ousley Champion of Quality award. The Chicago couple is being recognized for contributions to quality in the long-term and post-acute care community, according to a news release.

Both are involved with My InnerView by National Research Corporation. Mary serves as the vice president of quality initiatives, and Vivian is the senior research adviser.

Mary has focused most of her career on promoting the importance, role and function of CNAs and other direct caregivers, according to the release. She authored several sets of standards for dementia care units, sub-acute care and person-centered care. She continues to advocate nationally on the topics of quality, long-term care leadership and performance improvement.

“When considered alone, both Vivian and Mary have impacted this profession in innumerable ways,” Mary Ousley, AHCA quality chair and namesake of the award, said in the release. “But when you think about these two people as a combined force of positive change, it is astonishing how much they have guided the advancement of quality and research in long-term care. I cannot think of two more deserving people than Vivian and Mary for this award.”

The AHCA presents the award to an individual or organization that has made a significant national contribution to advancing quality performance in long-term care. Recipients must consistently advocate for quality approaches, while demonstrating the ability to educate and advocate for a systems approach to quality improvement. Recipients also display leadership in the development, promotion and implementation of quality improvement initiatives that improve the quality of care and quality of life for individuals in need of long-term care.

In 2011, the Friend of Quality Award was renamed the Mary K. Ousley Champion of Quality Award to honor the ongoing legacy and commitment to quality care demonstrated by Ousley.

The Tellis-Nayaks will be presented the award at the AHCA/NCAL 64th Annual Convention & Expo in October in Phoenix.
