Could you ask your readers to contact their legislators to tell them that workplace bullying is wrong?

Question:

Dear Nancy,

I found an excellent site on the Internet www.workplacebullying.org regarding bullying in the workplace. This site has helped me come to terms with the fact that I was indeed bullied, harassed and subjected to mental abuse on a daily basis by my manager in our local healthcare facility.

I provided superb care to my patients and was respected and looked up to by my co-workers. I begged HR to help me but they kept referring me back to the manager for “conflict resolution.”

What this website helped me realize is I did not cause this to happen, and I am not alone in having had this experience. Maybe your readers could contact their legislators and tell them that bullying in the workplace is wrong. Each time bullying laws are resubmitted, legislatures become more sensitized to the issue. When one state passes legislation, it makes the argument all the stronger.

Dear Nancy replies:

Dear Matilda,

Thank you for sharing your experiences with being bullied and providing a website that you have found helpful. There is a wealth of information on the Internet about bullying and hopefully after reading your note, other readers will visit those sites.

Your recommendation to contact one’s state legislator to lobby for anti-bullying legislation is essential. If nurses who are bullied keep quiet and move on to another workplace — where it may happen again — only the bullies win.

In addition to state laws prohibiting such conduct, employers need also to prohibit such conduct in their respective workplaces. To that end, you might be interested in two publications: “Bullying in the Workplace: Reversing a Culture” (2012) from the American Nurses Association and “Surviving Bullies, Queen Bees and Psychopaths in the Workplace” (2012) by author Patricia Barnes.

Cordially,
Nancy
