A nursing scholarship has been established in honor of geriatric expert Mathy Mezy, RN, PhD, FAAN, according to a release from Nurses Educational Funds Inc. The endowment came from the John A. Hartford Foundation Inc.
Mezey is professor emerita, senior research scientist and associate director of the Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing at New York University College of Nursing, New York City. Her lifelong work has been dedicated to geriatric nursing education and to improving the quality of care for older people in hospitals and long-term care facilities. Mezeys decades of leadership have motivated thousands of nursing and other students to work in the field of geriatric care, according to the news release, and one of her preferred philanthropies is scholarships allowing nurses to further their educations.
The NEF Mathy Mezey Fund will provide financial support to students specializing in geriatric nursing at both the masters and doctoral levels. Funding is available beginning with applications submitted this fall for the 2014-15 academic year. The NEF application period begins Oct. 1 and ends Feb. 1.
