How can an LPN, who is on probation, find part-time or full-time work and move forward?

Dear Donna,

I am an LPN and am on probation. I am working toward furthering my education. I am in school, but I need job, part-time or full-time. I cannot seem to get to the interview process. Do you have any advice for me? I just want a chance to prove myself and go forward.

On Probation

Dear Donna replies:

Dear On Probation,

It is challenging for me to respond to your question without knowing what restrictions or supervision requirements (if any) you have for a job due to the probation. However, I would suggest that you contact some nursing agencies who place nurses in non-traditional positions (presuming you have some type of restriction on your license) to see what they have to offer. They typically have part-time, temporary and contract positions. Some agencies only do hospital bedside placement, but others have a variety of opportunities for nurses.

Since you are currently not working, you could volunteer as a nurse while you continue to look for paid employment. Volunteering is a great way to get your foot in the door somewhere, keep your experience current and make valuable professional contacts since everything happens through networking.
And volunteering often turns into paid employment. Seek out volunteer (or paid) opportunities in your local public health department, American Red Cross, a free clinic, and so on.
