Vassar Brothers wound care center collects national hyperbaric accreditation

Health Quest in LaGrangeville, N.Y., has announced that its Wound Care and Hyperbaric Center at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., received Undersea Hyperbaric Medical Society accreditation. “The UHMS accreditation status, along with being a Joint Commission accredited medical facility specific to wound care, illustrates our commitment to meeting national standards for quality, clinical excellence, and safety,” Cheryl Walker, RN, MS, CWCN, clinical director at the Vassar Brothers Wound Care and Hyperbaric Center, said in a news release. “Our hyperbaric medicine program is state-of-the-art and evidence-based, providing our region with the best options possible for care.”

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is the use of oxygen at a level higher than atmospheric pressure to treat a variety of conditions, such as diabetic foot infections, chronic refractory osteomyelitis, arterial insufficiencies, compromised grafts and flaps, gas gangrene, and slow-healing wounds. A chamber is used to deliver 100% oxygen under pressure.

The Wound Care and Hyperbaric Center staff includes nurses certified in hyperbarics.

“Being [certified] has given me the opportunity to treat patients and see their quality of life improve from a variety of conditions, including tissue damage as a result of radiation therapy,” Paula Espejo, RN, CHRN, said in the release.

According to the news release, Vassar Brothers is one of only 10 wound care centers in New York State to achieve UHMS hyperbaric accreditation. •
