Question:

Dear Donna,

I am interested in becoming an RN, but I have heard so many stories that the profession is getting saturated. Would I be able to find a job after graduation?

Interested in Nursing

Dear Donna replies:

Dear Interested in Nursing,

Although the current hospital job market is tight for nurses in many parts of the country, the profession still offers a multitude of rich and diverse opportunities now and for years to come. As the job market continues to shift and evolve, nurses in the present and in the future need to look in new directions for employment and need new skills to find those jobs.

Nursing researchers are predicting that we are headed for what they call “the perfect storm,” which will result in the most severe nursing shortage we have ever seen. This is due to the aging population putting increased demands on healthcare, almost half of the nursing workforce planning to retire in the next 15 years and other factors. Healthcare reform also will provide even more opportunities for nurses. By the time you graduate, the job market should be wide open. Read “New nurse, new job strategies” (www.Nurse.com/Cardillo/Strategies) and “Success strategies for students” (www.Nurse.com/Cardillo/Strategies-for-Students).

Follow your heart and have faith that it will all work out.

Best wishes,
Donna
