Morristown nurses donate $25,000 to Sandy relief fund

Rather than receive gifts for National Nurses Week, the nursing staff at Morristown (N.J.) Medical Center decided to serve others in the community hit hard by Superstorm Sandy.

Nurses donated $25,000 to the Hurricane Sandy New Jersey Relief Fund.

Morristown nurse leaders were invited to a special donation ceremony April 9 with New Jersey First Lady Mary Pat Christie at Drumthwacket, the official New Jersey governor’s residence, according to a news release.

“The decision to donate to the victims of Hurricane Sandy was made based on nurses’ responses to a survey regarding the choice of a gift versus a donation,” Trish O’Keefe, RN, MSN, CNO at Morristown, said in the release. “This storm and its aftermath affected us all in different ways, and there are still many who continue to suffer. Nurses at Morristown Medical Center show their expertise, caring and compassion to our patients and families every day, so it’s no surprise that they chose to think of others during a week that celebrates them.”

During National Nurses Week, a check was presented by Morristown Medical Center to New Jersey Assemblywoman BettyLou DeCroce (R-District 26).

As of July 15, the fund had awarded more than $15 million in grants to nonprofit organizations working directly in communities most affected by Superstorm Sandy, according to the Fund website. Also during Nurses Week, winners were chosen for the 2013 MMC Nursing Awards. Honorees were Dara Carrigan, RN (Novice Nurse); the pediatric ICU (Best Nursing Team); and Gloria Chappelle, RN, Partners in Caring, wound care (Lifetime Achievement).

Along with a buffet provided by physicians for both day and night shift nurses, Morristown nurses were treated to chair massages, a pain symposium and a presentation called “Get stress before it gets you.” Nurses also met dogs who participate in Atlantic Health System’s pet therapy program.
