Hispanic nurses organization launches Long Island chapter

Roseanne Farano, EdS, MS, author of “The Dove in Downward Flight,” was the featured speaker April 7 as the National Association of Hispanic Nurses’ Long Island Branch held its first event, a chapter brunch at Adelphi University in Garden City, N.Y.

Farano, who has been a college professor, corporate executive in human resource management development and training, and maintained a psychotherapy practice for more than 30 years, is well known as an inspirational speaker on psychodynamics, interpersonal relationships and personal awareness.

The chapter was formed in October as an option for Long Island nurses who found time and travel constraints made it impossible to support the New York City NAHN chapter, said NAHN-LI president Helen C. Ballestas, RN, PhD, ANP-BC, assistant professor, Adelphi University College of Nursing and Public Health, Garden City, N.Y.

“That was the main premise for opening the Long Island chapter, where nurses from eastern Queens, Nassau and Suffolk counties could join the organization,” Ballestas said. “We are community based and focus on community projects that concern healthcare disparities and cultural diversity. Deliverance of effective nursing care through education drives our vision.”

Chapter leaders include Kelly Melore, RN, MS, secretary; and Maria Vera-Irizzary, RN. MS, treasurer.

Ballestas said the chapter already has 25 members.

“We’ve already successfully run a brunch-and-learn this past spring and are enthusiastically working on our next one in September,” she said.

Ballestas and four student members of the chapter presented a poster at the recent 38th NAHN Annual Conference, Aug. 6-9 in New Orleans.

“Our members and students remain active and engaged,” Ballestas said.
