I am interested in finding a nursing position in a European country. Where would I find information to start this process?

Question:

Dear Donna,

I am a licensed RN with a BSN and work in labor and delivery. I am interested in finding a nursing position in a European country. Where would I find information to start this process, and do you have any suggestions for working abroad?

Wants to Work Abroad

Dear Donna replies:

Dear Wants to Work Abroad,

Working abroad can be challenging, interesting and fun. You have a few options. The first would be to contact an international travel nurse agency and talk to a recruiter. The benefits of working with this type of agency are that they will find you an assignment, help you get your credentials transferred and help you with housing. Overseas assignments can run from six months to two years.

Your other option would be to contact the nursing regulatory authority/board in any individual country. They will have guidelines for nurses from outside the country who want to work there. Find these entities by doing an Internet search for, as an example, “Nursing authority in Ireland” or “Irish nursing board.”

I also would suggest you talk to other nurses who have worked abroad, particularly those who worked in any country you are considering working in. Find these nurses by asking around, online or in person. If you contact some international travel nurse agencies, they may be able to connect you with American nurses working abroad.

Best wishes,
Donna
