I worked as a nurse for two years in Nepal. Should I include this on my resume?

Question:

Dear Donna,

I am an RN from India and Nepal. I worked as a postoperative nurse in Nepal for two years. Now I live in Virginia and I passed the NCLEX. Do you think I should mention my experience on my resume and can I apply for jobs that require two years of experience?

Nurse from Nepal

Dear Donna replies:

Dear Nurse from Nepal,

By all means mention your overseas experience. Absolutely apply for positions that request two years of experience. Understand that the hospital job market is tight for all nurses right now, so be prepared. Even though you’re not a new nurse, read “New nurse, new job strategies” (www.Nurse.com/Cardillo/Strategies) to learn more about opportunities and how to find a job in the U.S.

Networking is known to be an effective way to find a job. Contact the National Association of Indian Nurses in American (http://www.nainausa.com/about.html) for help and support. Also connect with your state chapter of the American Nurses Association (http://www.virginianurses.com/).

Best wishes,
Donna
