Gun education

This is in response to Jennifer Thew’s April 8 opinion regarding nurses helping to focus the gun debate, “For Safety’s Sake” (Nurse.com/Article/Upfront-Guns).

As an RN, retired law enforcement officer, current military officer and gun owner, I support nurses educating gun owners in the safe handling of firearms.

As professionals, we need to avoid the emotional debates and realize that gun safety as a public health issue is no different than discussing seat belt and car seat usage for a car owner.

This does require, however, that nurses become educated in the safe handling of firearms and learn to approach gun safety education in a non-judgmental manner.

Some nurses might have to push outside their comfort zone to learn about firearms.

Thank you for raising this important issue.
