Marymount University holds Nurse Practitioner Career Day

Marymount University’s Malek School of Health Professions in Arlington, Va., recently hosted the inaugural Nurse Practitioner Career Day for graduating MSNs. Sponsored by the American Nurses Credentialing Center, the career day provided information relevant to all new nurse practitioners as they begin their practice, according to a news release.

Catharine Kopac, RN, PhD, CGNP, associate professor and chairwoman of Marymount’s graduate nursing programs, organized the conference and welcomed those in attendance and those viewing via webinar. She said the agenda covered a wide range of timely topics, including the need for liability insurance, certification requirements, mental health primary care, ethics in primary care and employment counsel, according to the release.

Opening the conference, Karen Drenkard, RN, PhD, NEA-BC, FAAN, executive director of the American Nurse Credentialing Center, noted that the career day was scheduled in part because of the impending expansion of healthcare to an additional 30 million Americans that will come with full implementation of the Affordable Care Act, according to the release.

“Nurse practitioners will be on the front lines,” Drenkard said at the event, according to the release. “The ANCC is doing its best to make sure that you’ll be the best nurse that you can be. We continue to raise standards through credential reviews and by providing opportunities for continuing education and professional development. These efforts will ensure that nurses keep up with changing practices.”

Kopac stressed the importance of Nurse Practitioner Career Day and ongoing professional development seminars in the release.

“It was indeed an honor for Marymount to host this event,” she said in the release. “The team of presenters from our own faculty and our visiting colleagues provided information based on a wealth of experience and expertise.”
