White Memorial Medical Center honors nurses with DAISY Awards

Sarah Miller, RN

Nurses at White Memorial Medical Center in Los Angeles were nominated for DAISY Awards by patients and family members. The awards are given by the DAISY Foundation to show nurses across the nation how appreciated they are by patients and families.

Labor and delivery nurse Sarah Miller, RN, received the award in April, and maternity nurse Candy Bonilla, RN, received the award in May.

Miller was recognized for taking the time to help patients understand their care. “Miss Sarah Miller, I really enjoyed you teaching me and my pregnant daughter, and educating us on what you were preparing, what medicine you were giving and taking the time to explain very clearly,” Miller’s nominator wrote.

Another nominator also praised Miller’s practice and bedside manner. “We would like to commend one of the labor and delivery nurses, Sarah Miller, RN, for her exemplary work as a nurse and for being an excellent representative of White Memorial Medical Center’s Mission and Guiding Principles,” one nominator wrote. “As a family of nurses, we believe that our expectations may have been higher than the average family. We are happy to report that nurse Miller and her colleagues far exceeded all of our expectations.”

One of Bonilla’s nominators shared a story about how she helped her breast-feed. “Milk was not coming in and as soon as I mentioned this to Candy, she came in with a breast pump and ice packs and started helping me,” the nominator wrote. “That evening I was already feeding my own milk to my baby, which meant the world to me. My husband and I felt very comfortable with her because she was well-informed and prepared.”

Another nominator said Bonilla was empathetic and understanding. “Candy made my experience at White Memorial a unique one,” a nominator wrote. “As soon as she greeted us, she was polite and compassionate toward my baby. She answered all of my questions and met my needs in a timely manner. Candy by all means cannot be in another field but nursing. We need more nurses like her!”
