Texas Health Arlington Memorial nurse earns Distinguished Service Award

Sue Sebazco, RN, MBA, CIC, infection prevention director for Texas Health Arlington Memorial Hospital, has been recognized as one of the top professionals in her field by an international organization.

Sebazco recently earned the Distinguished Service Award from the Washington, D.C.-based Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology. Presented annually to a member of APIC, the award recognizes outstanding professional contributions in a volunteer capacity at the national level.

“Sue serves as a key patient safety advocate by addressing infection prevention inside and outside the hospital walls,” Kirk King, FACHE, president of Texas Health Arlington Memorial, said in a news release. “Her unselfishness and willingness to promote patient safety locally and nationally is evident in the numerous roles she’s expertly served in. Her dedication should be applauded, and this award gives her the recognition she deserves.”

Sebazco has served as the hospital’s infection prevention director since 1983. She served as APIC’s president in 2005, one of many positions Sebazco has held as a member of the organization, which focuses on promoting wellness and infection prevention.

Her volunteer efforts and committee involvement within APIC have included serving as the chairwoman of the governmental affairs committee (1999, 2000 and 2001), public policy committee (2007) and program committee (1997).

Last year, Sebazco was appointed to the Healthcare Associated Infections/Preventable Adverse Events Advisory Panel for the state of Texas.

“My involvement at the local and national level has resulted in numerous opportunities to grow personally and professionally in a healthcare specialty that I’m so passionate about,” Sebazco said in the release. “I’m extremely humbled just to be considered, but being awarded for doing something I love makes this recognition all the more special.”

Sebazco was recognized in June at the organization’s annual conference in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
