Job fair know-how: Make the most of your next job expo

Wednesday, April 24, kicks off the Association for Health Care Recruitment (NAHCR) Virtual Nursing Job Expo. The online, 3-D event continues Thursday, April 25.

The virtual nursing expo is a unique job search opportunity where you’ll have the chance to browse open positions, interact with recruiters and fellow attendees, view presentations, and attend a live Q&A. You can upload your resume and build a personal profile. Take advantage of the video resume section where you can communicate your nursing experience in a refreshing, more personalized format. Registration is free and even if you can’t attend the live career fair, job postings will be accessible for 30 days.

Whether you’re attending a virtual job fair in the comfort of your own home, or you have a chance to visit an on-site career expo, here are some expert tips for finding — and snagging — the perfect job for you.

  • For a resume that stands out from the pile, keep it brief and organized. Pepper your resume with strong keywords like ‘detail-oriented’ and ‘highly motivated.’ Don’t forget to proofread — better yet, have someone else do the proofing for you. They’re bound to find mistakes that you’ll miss.
  • Maybe you’ve thought about a career change but you’re not really sure what you want. Even if you’re not actively seeking a new job, a career fair can be a great networking pool. It will also give you the chance to browse the market.
  • Follow up. With lots of applicants, it can be easy to lose track of all of the people a recruiter meets at a job fair. Make sure you leave with their contact info. Afterwards, follow up with a phone call or email to thank the recruiter for their time and express your continued interest in the position or institution.
  • Brush up on your networking skills. Attend a networking event or nurse association meeting to practice in an environment with lower stakes. Don’t forget to shake hands and smile.
  • Decide what you want beforehand. Of course you want a job. But in a perfect world, what job would it be? What qualities would the perfect employer have?  Give this exercise a try, in writing. Make your wants specific. Henry David Thoreau said, “The secret of achievement is to hold a picture of a successful outcome in your mind.” Visualizing may help you narrow down your search and might even bring you the success you’ve been looking for.

The right job is out there for you, but you won’t find it unless you look.
