The Northern Section California School Nurses Organization gave two Northern California school nurses awards. Kathy Hahn, RN, MSN, PNP, received the School Nurse Administrator of the Year Award and Donna Beckman, RN, received the School Nurse of the Year Award during the organizations annual spring conference at the California State University Sacramento Alumni Center.
Hahn has been employed by the Vallejo (Calif.) City Unified School District for 13 years and is the coordinator of student health services and full-service community schools. She developed and runs school-based health centers in the district, which provide support services, physical exams, urgent care and dental care.
Beckman is a school nurse and nursing coordinator for special education in the San Joaquin County Office of Education in Stockton, Calif. She has worked as a school nurse for 13 years and has been involved with a teen pregnancy prevention program. She trains colleagues in specialized healthcare procedures for children with special medical needs.
Each year the organization honors a school nurse of distinction who demonstrates excellence in school nursing practice and school health. Nominees for this honor must be a registered professional nurse, have five years of experience as a school nurse and practice full time as a school nurse, according to a news release. The National Association of School Nurses identifies school nursing as a specialized practice of professional nursing that advances the well-being, academic success and lifelong achievement of students.
