National award winner from Rush is star of event held in her honor

Melissa Browning, RN, DNP, APRN, CCNS, a critical care clinical nurse specialist at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, knew exactly whom to thank Dec. 6 during the Nurse.com Nursing Excellence Awards 2012 Nurse of the Year celebration at Rush: everybody.

“This is nothing I did alone,” Browning said after accepting a commemorative award, a framed photo and a presentation bouquet from Nurse.com’s Cheryl Portner, RN, MSN, vice president of staff development and training and nurse executive for the Greater Chicago region. “I couldn’t do what I do without the amazing people I work with every day. … It’s overwhelming. I really appreciate it.”

The event was held after Browning was named one of six national winners of Nurse.com’s Nursing Excellence Awards 2012. She won in the clinical care inpatient category, and a number of her colleagues praised her at the event, including her nominator Benson Wright, RN, MSN, Magnet program coordinator at Rush. It wasn’t a particularly difficult nomination to put together, he said. “I just used the words of other people.”

Some of those other people included David Baldwin, MD, head of the section of endocrinology; Donna Stel, RN, BSN, CCRN; and Marsha Mulbarger, RN, MS, CNML, director of adult critical care — all who spoke admiringly of Browning at the event.

“Melissa is so dynamic, and she is very interactive,” Stel said. “She has definitely done a lot. She’s an excellent communicator and she gets the word out.” At the end of her speech, Stel turned to Browning and said: “You didn’t ask to be the quality queen, but you wear the crown perfectly.”
