Harvard Medical School’s affiliated teaching hospital, Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge, Mass., recently awarded six local high school graduates with $500 nursing scholarships.

All of the recipients are now pursuing nursing degrees.

Burlington High School grad Lina Sganga is attending University of Massachusetts Lowell. She was diagnosed with leukemia at age 9.

“Being around nurses for so many years has inspired me to become a nurse myself,” she said in a news release.

Jackie Ciommo of Belmont High School is attending Quinnipiac University and has experience as a caregiver for two family members. “I was really inspired by the compassion the nurses had, and I really knew it was the profession for me,” she said. “I hope to work in pediatrics or in the neonatal intensive care unit.”

Recent Somerville High School grad Nazha Ferradi is also attending UMass Lowell.

“I would like to make a difference in peoples’ lives,” Ferradi said. “It begins with a smile.”

Alicia Vantour, a graduate of Waltham High School, is attending Boston College. She was inspired to pursue nursing after experiencing caretaking first hand with her grandmother, who suffers from lupus.

Watertown High School grad Samantha Green is attending UMass Dartmouth and was inspired to pursue nursing after shadowing her aunt, who works as a nurse.

Kayla Adams-Sena, a recent graduate of Latin High School, is attending Pace University in New York City.

“I’ve helped my grandfather take care of my aunt, and I really enjoy it and the feeling it brings me,” Adams-Sena said of her nursing inspiration.
