I have permanent Canadian residency, but my RN and LPN certifications are from the U.S. How can I receive a U.S. social security number?
Dear Donna replies:
Dear Canadian Nurse,
As I understand it, to apply for a U.S. social security number, you will need to obtain a TN visa (Trade Nafta visa). To apply for this you will need a visa screen certificate from CGFNS International (which is composed of the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools, the International Commission on Healthcare Professions and the International Consultants of Delaware). Visit its website at www.cgfns.org/sections/programs/vs/. CGFNS International is your best source for further information and support on this.
You can then apply to the Social Security Administration for a SSN at http://ssa.gov/pubs/10096.html#a0=1.
