I found the July 16 cover story ACA pushing forward (www.Nurse.com/ACA) informative and perplexing. The article states the ACA is providing $71.3 million in grants to strengthen the nursing workforce through education and training.
I graduated from a nursing school that received a grant to boost enrollment. But after graduating in May 2011, I have been unable to find more than a per-diem position in a skilled nursing facility. Most hospitals are not willing to hire unless the RN has experience.
As a nation, it would be wise to invest some of that money into hospital new grad training programs.
