Bayhealth recently announced Lauren Huff, RN, BSN, and Pamela James, RN, BSN, have won its Nurse of the Year awards. Huff is the winner for Bayhealth Kent General in Dover, Del., and James is Nurse of the Year for Milford (Del.) Memorial Hospital.
Both now are nominees for the Delaware Excellence in Nursing Practice Awards, given by the Delaware Nurses Association each year to the top nurses in Delaware.
Huff is a staff nurse in the orthopedic/neurosurgery/spine unit. According to a news release, her caring, compassionate nature was evident during a recent incident in which a patient in her unit began to lose consciousness and suffered severe chest pains. Huff responded quickly to stabilize the patient, then took time to sit and talk with him and calm his fears.
“Laurens warmth and compassion were so vital in helping the patient and his wife get through a difficult and scary episode,” Nurse Manager Kathy Boyer, RN, MSN, CMSRN, CNML, said in the release. “Lauren helped the patient understand what was happening, held his hand and reassured him.”
James is clinical coordinator on the med/surg unit. Under her leadership, the unit has achieved 100% compliance with core measures on clinical quality, and patient satisfaction scores have climbed steadily, according to the release.
“Pam deserves (Nurse of the Year) for many reasons, including her commitment to our patients and to their outcomes,” Milfords Med/Surg Nurse Manager Dianne Varanko, RN, MSN, said in the news release.
Other Nurse of the Year nominees from Kent General included Melissa Chambers, RN; Laura Wedel, RN, MSN; Boyer; and Suellen Wilkins, RN, MSN, CPAN, CCRN. Additional nominees from Milford included Al Vayada, RN, BSN; and Janelle Hobbs, RN.
