Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, Calif., recently approved the use of smartphone technology for its nurses and clinicians at the point of care to improve response time and patient outcomes.

“Missed and delayed communication represents one of the greatest safety risks in hospitals, and Cedars-Sinai has made a commitment to change that,” said Voalte CNO Teresa Anderson, RN, EdD, MSN, RNC-OB, NE-BC.
With Voalte’s system, nurses and clinicians can send and receive presence-based text messages, make high-definition voice calls across the hospital VoIP system, and receive critical care alarms on the iPhone, providing faster response to patient needs.
Nurses were included in every phase of selection and implementation of the system, Anderson said.
“Since the iPhones are the same devices most nurses own for personal use, learning to use them was intuitive. Nurses are also empowered and encouraged to provide ongoing suggestions for improvements with the push of a unique feedback button,” she said.
“As a hospital dedicated to innovation and the patient experience, we realized several years ago that mobile-based technology was the leading edge of point of care,” said Darren Dworkin, senior vice president and chief information officer at Cedars-Sinai. “We plan to rollout more than 1,000 iPhones in the next year.”
