On Nov. 15, national award winner Brandee A. Fetherman, RN, MSN, CCRN, ICU clinical coordinator, was presented the Nurse.com Nursing Excellence 2011 Award in the clinical care category at Morristown (N.J.) Medical Center by colleagues and Nurse.com staff. “The Nurse.com Nursing Excellence program is a very special one because we have the opportunity to recognize outstanding nurses who excel in and contribute to our profession,” said Janice Petrella Lynch, RN, MSN, Nurse.com regional reporter, who presented the award to Fetherman.

Fetherman was nominated by Denise Fochesto, RN, MSN, APN-C, NP-BC, unit manager, who praised her commitment to patients, families, MMC and Atlantic Health for the past 10 years.

Recognized by the American Nurses Credentialing Center and the Organization of Nurse Executives of New Jersey, Fetherman worked with physicians to develop admission order sets for the ICU and tracked utilization compliance for two years. Fetherman collaborated with the data analyst of the National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators to produce a data report that communicates unit-specific outcomes readily to nursing staff and designed and conducted independent research to establish validity and reliability for a pain assessment tool for nonverbal, mechanically ventilated patients, which is now standard in the ICU.

“I am privileged to work every day with an empowered and dedicated ICU staff,” said Fetherman, who was surrounded by more than 75 colleagues and friends.

First a mentee to Trish O’Keefe, RN, MSN, NE-BC, CNO at Morristown, she now serves as a mentor for nurses seeking professional development in leadership and quality improvement. “[Brandee] embodies the qualities of a true clinical leader and serves as a role model for our staff and our profession. We are very proud of her accomplishments,” O’Keefe said.
