Can I challenge the Board of LVN to take the exam?

Question:

Dear Donna,

How do I challenge the Board of LVN to take the exam? I am an RN student who has completed 18 months out of the 24-month program. I’ve submitted my application, but the board says I need 15.1 months of med/surg experience. How does that make sense if the LVN program is only 18 months?

Dao

Dear Donna replies:

Dear Dao,

You don’t mention what state you are in so I cannot check the regulations. But I suggest you confer with one of your nursing instructors on this. He or she may either be able to better explain the regulations to you or give you advice on how to challenge the board’s ruling.

You also can make your own case (challenge the decision) by writing to the executive director of the board (check its website for correct contact information). Consider consulting a nurse attorney to help you with this. You also can speak with a local politician (e.g. assembly member, representative), for some support.

Best wishes,
Donna
