What should I do if I have questions about appropriate staffing, care?

Question:

Dear Donna,

When is it appropriate for an LPN to be charge nurse over an RNC-LRN? When is it appropriate to send the RNc-LRN home on call and leave the LPN alone staffing the unit with a patient care tech? When is it appropriate to start a C-section without a surgical assist physician present in the OR? Please understand I am very fearful of retaliation, and I am requesting your confidential help.

D

Dear Donna replies:

Dear D,

These are not questions that can be answered comprehensibly in this forum, especially without knowing what state (or country) you practice in, what your facility/department policy and procedures are, etc. Because you obviously have concerns and need some answers, I urge you to contact a nurse attorney for a consultation. Do this for your own peace of mind and to protect your rights.

Find a nurse attorney by asking around, through a referral from your state chapter of the American Nurses Association (if you’re in the U.S.) or another nursing professional association (even if you are not a member), or, if you are in the U.S., from The American Association of Nurse Attorneys (www.taana.org).

Best wishes,
Donna
