Can I use my hyphenated name instead of my married name in my nurse consultant practice?

Question:

Dear Donna,

I am in the process of starting a nurse consultant practice but plan to change my name back to a hyphenated combination of my birth and married names. All of my licenses, passport, etc., are under my married name, but now I want to change them to the hyphenated version. Legally, can I include the hyphenated name in my new practice and on business cards while I am in the process of changing my licenses and other official documents to match?

JZ

Dear Donna replies:

Dear JZ,

I am not an attorney, but based on what you are telling me, there is really no reason why you can’t use your hyphenated name in the way you describe, even before you legally change it.

Good luck!
Donna
