Will there soon be a federal law requiring a BSN to remain in the nursing profession?

Question:

Dear Donna,

Did the law come out requiring RNs with an ADN to get a BSN within 10 years? Where can I find more information about it?

Cat

Dear Donna replies:

Dear Cat,

There is no such law. Some individual states are considering enforcing a “BSN in 10” requirement for continued licensure in their state, but I don’t believe any state has yet mandated this. The proposals typically apply only to nurses who graduate after a future date. That means it would not affect currently licensed RNs, or those who are licensed before the mandate goes into effect. We would be grandfathered in.

That being said, more and more hospitals are now only hiring nurses with BSNs and requiring their current staff to work toward a BSN. So the national trend is moving in that direction whether any laws or mandates are ever put into place or not.

Best wishes,
Donna
