Diamond Children’s Celebrates NICU ‘Graduates’ at Annual Picnic

Nurses at Diamond Children’s Medical Center celebrated another year with their NICU “graduates” Oct. 2 during the facility’s annual picnic.

“We have many families return each year to celebrate the care they received from the staff in the NICU,” says Melissa Perillo, RN, the unit’s patient care manager. Hosted by Diamond, formerly University Medical Center, the event has held at Reid Park in Tucson, Ariz., for 25 years.

“It’s a time for families to visit with the staff who took care of their baby and reconnect with families they met while in the unit. Families bring thank-you cards and pictures of their baby over the years to show their progression, which is very gratifying for our nurses,” Perillo says.

Approximately 200 people annually attend the picnic, which includes a jumping castle, balloon artist, games, music, face painting and food.
