Critical Care Champions Break Bread

Baptist Hospital in Miami hosted its annual Critical Care Champions Dinner in May for caregivers and patients who survived life-threatening injuries and illnesses. The event was a chance for 75 guests to celebrate life and good health.

Former patient Manuel Delgado received a hug from his nurse, Janessa Suarez, RN, at the dinner. Delgado suffered cardiac arrest and had no vital signs for 24 minutes. His family was told he would be in a vegetative state if he survived, but he made a complete recovery during his stay.

Lynn Kirkpatrick happily reunited with one of her former nurses, Arelene Torres, ARNP, at the dinner. Kirkpatrick last year was among the first pregnant women in Miami to contract the H1N1 virus. After giving birth to twins, she was sedated in the CCU for 19 days. She spent a month in the hospital, and now she and her twins, who were born at 28 weeks, are healthy.
