Atlantic Health Offers Students Extern Program Opportunity

This year, 30 students from various nursing programs were selected to participate in Atlantic Health’s Nursing Summer Extern program at Overlook Hospital in Summit, N.J., and Morristown (N.J.) Memorial Hospital. The externs worked in various departments, such as NICU, ED and critical care.

The summer externs at Overlook Hospital shadowed units within the hospital and attended an open-heart surgery at Liberty Science Centers Cardiac Classroom during their eight-week program. Aside from their daily clinical duties, the externs worked side by side with preceptors on their specific unit.

Atlantic Health’s Nursing Extern Program began in 2000, and every year nursing students are chosen by nurse educators Roxanne Sabatini, RN-BC, MSN, CCRN, and Julie Ang, RN, who serve as extern educators, and the human resources recruiter.

“It’s such a pleasure to coordinate this program every year,” said Claudia Cotarelo, recruiter of corporate human relations at Atlantic Health in Morristown, N.J. “Each student is so excited to participate and grateful for the opportunity. … Every year I hear ‘Thank you. I’m going back to school a different student.’ ”
