I started a new job in OB and I hate it. Should I look elsewhere?

Question:

Dear Donna,

I started a new job working on a high-risk OB unit. I was really excited about the job because I thought where I wanted to be was labor and delivery. So getting my foot in the door for OB sounded great. Now that I’m here, I hate the job. I dread going to work. I have no enjoyment in anything I do. Should I look elsewhere or suck it up?

Tiffany

Dear Donna replies:

Dear Tiffany,

I wish I knew what you didn’t like about it. Is it the work, people, environment, schedule or patients? Is it possible you haven’t given yourself adequate time to get acclimated or taken steps to feel more comfortable, such as joining the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (www.awhonn.org)? I’m only guessing because there are many possible reasons for your unhappiness.

That being said, many of us have taken jobs and then realized it is not a good fit for us. It even happened to me years ago. I knew after two weeks the job wasn’t right for me, but I stuck it out for six months because I didn’t want to quit so soon. Things only got worse, and I was never happy.

There’s no point in staying in a job where you are so unhappy and dread going to work. Life is too short for that. Start looking elsewhere, but before you make another move, do your homework. Read “How to Change Specialties” at www.Nurse.com/Cardillo/ChangeSpecialties. Nurses sometimes make changes without doing much research on a new specialty or place of employment.

If you don’t believe there is anything that will make your current situation better, then it may be best to cut your losses and move on. Talk the situation over with a trusted friend or family member and listen to your gut. Learn from the experience and move forward.

My best wishes,
Donna
