Saint Clare’s Nurtures RNs During Nurses Week

“We have over a thousand reasons to celebrate Nurses Week 2010,” says Suellyn Ellerbe, RN, MN, NEA-BC, Saint Clare’s Health System executive vice president, chief operating office and chief nursing officer. “And every one of them is wearing a Saint Clare’s name tag.”

A week of activities honored the nurses at Saint Clare’s Health System. For the first time, the Nurses Week Committee planned an all-day Nurturing the Nurse program, a distinguished nurse lectureship and a cultural diversity program. The focus of the Nurturing the Nurse program was for nurses to take care of themselves and included meeting wellness and holistic health professionals. The nurses who attended participated in yoga, received samples of lip balm from a medical spa, drank cups of herbal tea and received hand massages.

Many speakers presented throughout the day, including Jackie Blanchard, RN, who made the nurses laugh with her presentation on “10 Things They Didn’t Teach You in Nursing School.” Lorraine Lewandowski, RN, coordinator of the Nurturing the Nurse program, says she was happy with the audiences’ reaction. “It was great to do something for our nurses and to introduce them to places and people in our community that provide healthy and holistic services,” Lewandowski says.

During Nurturing the Nurse Day, Suellyn Ellerbe RN, Saint Clare’s executive vice president, COO and CNO, receives a hand massage from Nancy Greuter, RN, while Lourdes Porter, RN; Lorraine Lewandowski, RN; Kelly Ommundsen, RN; and Marcia Marchetti, RN, wait in line.

To promote cultural diversity, nurses from different countries shared their food, native outfits, customs and dances. Some performances included an Irish and Hawaiian dance with a folk singer.

Saint Clare’s also presented Nurse Excellence Awards to nurses in six categories and offered the Blessing of Hands to remind nurses their work is a sacred, healing ministry.

“Saint Clare’s nurses are caring, compassionate and dedicated to the healing mission and we are proud to honor them during Nurses Week,” says Debbie Regen, RN, MA, executive director of nursing at Saint Clare’s.
