VNSNY Presents ESPRIT Awards During Nurses Week

The Visiting Nurse Service of New York 2010 ESPRIT Award ceremony was held at the Bohemian National Ballroom in New York City. The 26 registered nurses who were chosen as ESPRIT winners were honored for their commitment to embodying VNSNY’s six values that make up the acronym for which the award is named — Excellence, Service to Customers, People, Fiscal Responsibility, Initiative and Teamwork.

New York Times best-selling author and NYU Steinhardt School of Education professor Elizabeth M. Norman, RN, served as the evening’s special guest speaker.

In the presence of family, friends and colleagues, this year’s RN winners — Sultana Alibasic, Loretta Bailey, Vinnette Davis, Donna Desmond, Shannon M. Frith, Lawanda Garner, Johanna M. Goepel, Jane Granite, Nancy Hall, Iris Izquierdo-Davis, Pat Jackson, Eileen Kirby, James Kowalski, Elizabeth Lapp, Lucy Ann Lugo, Charles G. Meys, Lilliene Mine, Ewa Natkaniec, Zelma Perez-Sandy, Julia Sachs, Barbara Sengenberger, Ursula Szurkowski, Sandra Tan Rigby, Michelle D. Thomas-Leslie, Susan Tooker and Denise E. Walpole — were presented with a certificate and obelisk marking the event.

The Voices of VNSNY completed the evening with a rendition of Mariah Carey’s “Hero.”

Along with the ESPRIT winners, 21 employees were honored for their academic achievements and publishing contributions, and seven were recognized for 30 or more years of service.

Special honors went to those who received awards from outside of the VNSNY organization. For being selected as the 2010 Home Care Association of New York State Caring Award winner and as a finalist in the Community Service category of the 2010 Nursing Spectrum Excellence Awards, Marilyn Lugo, RN, a clinical nurse specialist in maternity, newborn and pediatrics, was presented with a medal and biography of VNSNY founder Lillian Wald. Lugo will attend the Nursing Spectrum Excellence Awards ceremony June 2 with Mentoring category finalist Marilyn Liota, RN, regional administrator for acute care, VNSNY Queens.
