Move over Kelly, Fantasia and Carrie. Theres a new batch of idols in town and, as the staff found out May 6 during the Mercy Idol contest, they are working as nurses at Mercy Medical Center in Rockville Centre, N.Y., a Catholic Health Services of Long Island facility.
The first Mercy idol contest was held in the employee cafeteria as part of the medical centers National Nurses Week celebration, providing diners and audience members with enough lunchtime entertainment to rival the real American Idol.
In Mercys version, the shows emcee, Beth Vlahavas, RN, director of nursing for the ER and behavioral health, jovially handed out golden tickets to Hollywood, Fla., instead of Hollywood, Calif.Winners of the Mercy idol contest were, from left, Barbara Sims, RN; Kelly Zappolo, RN; Diane Kret, RN; Chika Anueyiagu, RN; and Elissa Eye, RN.
First place went to a trio of nurses who brought everyone to their feet with their rendition of Proud Mary. Barbara Sims, Katherine Thompson, and Patti Lasaponaro, of 2 North, changed the lyrics to encourage Mercys nurses to keep rollin, rollin, rollin on to Magnet. The singing sisters, Sister Ricki and Sister Maryalice
