RN Newsletter Bridges Nurse-Physician Communication Gap

University of Kansas Hospital physicians are staying better informed about the latest changes and patient care updates on each unit through an RN-generated newsletter.

Spearheaded last year by Liz Miquelon, RN, BSN, float pool educator, the From Your RN newsletter will publish its first anniversary issue this month.

The newsletter is distributed monthly to physicians via the hospital’s Intranet, as well as in print throughout breakrooms and other areas.

Among the topics covered by nurses are medication changes, adjustments to bedside care and new equipment being used, says Miquelon, editor in chief.

A regular “From Your Pharmacist” section also is included in the newsletter, she says. “We want to make sure there’s correct information each month to physicians,” Miquelon says. “It helps improve their practice and our patient satisfaction.”

In addition to nurse authors from each department, Miquelon also receives help producing the newsletter from editors Jennifer Thibault, RN, BSN, MBA, quality outcomes coordinator for nursing quality and research, and Mike Hastings, RN, BSN, CEN, research quality outcomes coordinator for the ED.

“The feedback we’ve had from physicians is that it’s a quick read,” Miquelon says. “We want to make it an easy read so they can read it quickly each month and continue on with the patient care.”

From Your RN has inspired the hospital’s pharmacy to start publishing its own newsletter for nurses, Miquelon says. “Patients are staying alive longer and we’re keeping them well through these practice changes and innovations,” Miquelon says. “It’s been exciting each month to get our team together.”
