New NuHealth Center Provides Hope, Healing

Residents of the medically underserved community of Roosevelt, N.Y., now have access to a state-of-the-art facility with the recent opening of the Roosevelt/Freeport Family Health Center on Nassau Road. The center, which moved from a smaller space that offered fewer services, represents a partnership between the Town of Hempstead, community leaders and NuHealth System, a Long Island-based healthcare organization. It is one of four centers NuHealth operates.

“Welcome to Roosevelt’s renaissance,” Kate Murray, Town Supervisor, said at the center’s ribbon-cutting ceremony Jan. 27. Joined by Town Councilwoman Dorothy Goosby (D) of District 1, NuHealth System CEO and president Arthur A. Gianelli, and a host of civic and religious leaders, Murray officially opened the 24,000-square-foot center that offers adult and pediatric medicine, women’s health services, prenatal care and family planning, as well as consultations with specialists in diabetes, podiatry, vision, and preventive care and wellness.

The facility also houses the Institute for Healthcare Disparities, with programs on cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and HIV and AIDS prevention and awareness, and the offices for NuHealth’s managed care program, NuCare.

The new center symbolizes a revitalization of the community that has been 30 years in the making. The property on which the center stands has been vacant for almost 20 of those years.

“The community has really embraced this project,” says Margaret Mauro, RN, BSN, nurse manager of the center. A former head nurse at Nassau County Medical Center, a NuHealth facility, Mauro says the staff has developed a relationship with the community over the years. “We’ve watched them grow. We’ve watched their children grow,” she says. “We’ve watched some of them become senior citizens.

“There’s always been great care given,” Mauro says. “Finally, we have a facility that matches that quality care.”
