Mock Joint Commission surveyors are accusing us of practicing medicine. Where can I find information on nursing scope of practice as it relates to administration of pain meds in the PACU?

Question:

Dear Donna,

I’m trying to find information on nursing scope of practice as it relates to nursing judgment and administration of pain meds in the PACU — specifically, having standing orders by anesthesiologists that we choose from based on the patient’s allergies, pain level, HX, etc. Everything I find is broad. Mock Joint Commission surveyors are accusing us of practicing medicine.

Daylene

Dear Donna replies:

Dear Daylene,

This is something your national and state chapters of the American Society of PeriAnesthesia Nursing (www.aspan.org) might be able to help you with. You can and should also call on your facility/corporate risk manager and quality improvement coordinators for their help as well. That’s what they’re there for. Whoever did the mock survey should be able to advise you on what needs to be done to eliminate their concern.

Good luck,
Donna
