Florida Gerontological RNs Reach Out to Community Member

Members and friends of the Florida Gerontological Nurses Association showed support for an Orange County senior by painting her home.

“You all are so nice to come out here,” said the elderly woman known as Ms. M, as she emerged from her house on a sunny Saturday morning, according to an FLGNA newsletter. “Thank you, thank you, thank you.”

Ms. M’s family members are not sure of her exact age, but they state she is at least 95 years old. Ms. M estimates the number to be a bit higher. “I am 100 and something, but don’t ask me about the something because I’m not gonna tell you,” she said.

Two FLGNA members escort Ms. M around her newly painted home for a better look.

“So many of us were inspired by the opportunity to help Ms. M,” said Patti Cantillo-Kodzis, RN, president of FLGNA. “She was an inspiration all by herself. And this event reinforced our commitment, as gerontological nurses, to promote quality care for our aging population and make Florida a better place for older adults and those who care for them.”

The FLGNA partnered with Seniors First, a senior-friendly organization, which provided supplies and coordination. “With the help of our partners and our amazing and dedicated nurses, Ms. M’s world is a little brighter now — and so is ours,” said Cantillo-Kodzis.
