Heartland RN Named Nurse of the Year in Community Service

A Heartland nurse was among six exceptional nurses who spent the weekend of Oct. 26 in Las Vegas — but what happened there certainly won’t stay there.

Sandra Walters, RN, a breast specialist who founded the Andre Center for Breast Cancer Education and Navigation in Denver, received a NurseWeek Nurse of the Year award for her work in Community Service.

In 2006, Walters took a leap of faith and launched her own nonprofit program to serve breast cancer patients.

Two years later, the center had helped 250 women throughout Colorado, Walters says. The program provides education on treatment options as well as guidance in making decisions after diagnosis.

NurseWeek is proud to recognize extraordinary nurses.
