Newest Idol Judge Not So ‘Jolly’

Jennifer Thew’s career highlight used to be her loss to Britney Spears in the championship round of Star Search as a 9-year-old.

Now, “Jolly Jennifer” — as she is known in the songwriting world — has a new entry for her business card.

Thew is the newest judge on the wildly popular TV show “American Idol.”

Thew, however, did not have an enjoyable beginning to her judging career.

New American Idol judge Jennifer Thew (right) listens to Jan “The Peoria Princess” Lynch audition for the show.

Thew and fellow judges Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson, and Paula Abdul listened to six hours of auditions in Peoria, Ill., last month and came away unimpressed.

“Nobody has quite the talent that I have,” Thew said. “That’s painfully obvious.”

Thew “endured” the vocal stylings of such performers as classical musician Jan “The Peoria Princess” Lynch and rocker Barry “Boom Boom” Bottino.

Barry “Boom Boom” Bottino screeches out his American Idol audition.

“Dreadful,” Thew said, stealing a word from fellow judge Simon’s vocabulary. “Just dreadful. I didn’t think it would be this difficult to find talent.”

After her loss on Star Search, Thew became a successful songwriter, penning hits for Mariah Carey, Three Doors Down, Rage Against the Machine and Lil Wayne.

She is currently married to former Van Halen lead singer David Lee Roth.
