Nurse Wins Educator Award
Joy Spellman, director, Center for Public Health Preparedness, Burlington County College, in Pemberton and Mount Laurel, N.J., received the 2008 Nurse Educator — Academic Governor’s Nursing Merit Award at the 20th Annual celebration, held at the Princeton Hyatt Regency.
Rutgers Professor Wins Tribute
Rachel Jones, assistant professor at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey College of Nursing in Newark, N.J., has received the New York Times Tribute to Nurses Award for nurse educators, and the Rutgers-Newark Provost’s Award for Community Engagement in Research. Her research includes HIV sexual risk behaviors in young urban women and use of multimedia computer technology to enhance culturally based health promotion. Oncology Nursing Scholarship
Carla Schaefer, a treatment nurse at the Cancer Institute of New Jersey (CINJ), New Brunswick, N.J., earned the Excellence in Basic Oncology Nursing scholarship award for working with patients who have hematologic malignancies and for developing patient information on understanding CBCs.
2008 Nurse of the Year
Barbara Ann Julian, Medical-Surgical Nursing, Bayshore Hospital, Holmdel, N.J., has been named 2008 Nurse of the Year by Bayshore Community Health Services.
Saint Francis in Poughkeepsie Honors RNs
Nancy Magliocca, director of Mental Health Services, received the NYSNA District 12 Award for Nursing Excellence in Administration. Helen Bunyi, community health nurse at Saint Francis Hospital Home Care, with a specialty in wound and ostomy care, received the NYSNA Award for Nursing Excellence in Clinical Practice.
CNO Wins Governor’s Merit Award
Maria Brennan, CNO, St. Joseph’s Healthcare System, and VP, Patient Care Services at St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center, Paterson, N.J., has been awarded the 2008 Governor’s Nursing Merit Award for Nurse Administrator.
RN Wins Top Award at Phelps Hospital
Cheryl Burke, clinical nurse specialist, Medical/Surgical Unit, Phelps Memorial Hospital Center, Sleepy Hollow, N.Y., has received the hospital’s highest annual nursing award. The Nurse of Distinction award is given to a nurse based on the delivery of exemplary clinical care to patients and their families; ability to mentor and serve as a professional role model to peers; enhance the nursing profession through leadership and teamwork; promote high levels of patient and customer satisfaction; and encourage a positive work environment.
Chilton Memorial’s Circle of Excellence
Chilton Memorial Hospital, Pompton Plains, N.J., inducted four of its nurses into its Circle of Excellence: Mandy Garnier, Intermediate Care Unit — Excellence in Patient-Centered Care by a Novice RN Practitioner; Linda Thoden, director of Critical Care Services — Excellence in Nursing Leadership; Brianne Bilello, ED — Excellence in Patient-Centered Care by a Preceptor; Kathi Hoffman, Cardiac Intermediate Care Unit — Excellence in Patient-Centered Care by a Staff Nurse.
Theresa Gabay presented “The Split Decision: Evolution of Corpus Callostomy for the Treatment of Pediatric Epilepsy” at the American Association of Neuroscience Nurses in Nashville. Maria Mark and Dawn Grossano received certifications in radiology nursing; Aimee Tipoll was certified in MCH; Mary McGuinness was certified as a home care coding specialist. Sharon Mancini received an MS in advanced practice nursing, psych/mental health from NYU. Amalia Moya was named the Proctor and Gamble GI Nurse of the Year. 2008 Nursing Excellence Awards: Debbie Peters, Pediatric Oncology — Pediatric Outpatient Nurse; Tara Paltridge, PICU — Pediatric Inpatient Nurse; Laura McBride, Cancer Center — Adult Outpatient Nurse; Kristin McNerney, 4 South — Adult Inpatient Nurse; Doreen Washington, nurse manager, MICU — Nurse Leader; Carol Weber, nurse manager, PICU — Nurse Leader. Evan Epper and Marlissa Marquees, Endoscopy, volunteered with a Physicians for Peace medical mission in Africa.

Cheryl Manasier, ED, Nyack Hospital, Nyack, N.Y., received the Rockland County EMS Registered Professional Nurse of Excellence award at its annual recognition ceremony for contributions to the EMS community.
