School Nurse of the Month

Diane Lynch, Midstreams Elementary School nurse, Brick Township, N.J., was nominated by first-grade teacher Christine McIver to be Radio Station 94.3 The Point’s Nurse of the Month. Each week in May a team of nurses and staff were honored by The Point and Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch, N.J. Lynch and the Midstreams staff were the Point’s winners for the week of May 12.

Nurse Wins Research Grant

Lolita Jacob, RN, MSN (l), receives research grant award from Chat Conde, RN, MSN, FNP, BC, president, Sigma Theta Tau International Lambda Delta Chapter (c), and Mary Ann Duffy, RN, MA, CNNA-BC, past president.

At its 18th Annual Research Day on May 2, Lolita Jacob, PICC coordinator at Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch, N.J., received a research grant at the Marjorie K. Unterberg School of Nursing and Health Studies, Monmouth University, West Long Branch, N.J. Jacob’s research is “The Experience of Transition in Patients with PICC for Home Intravenous Antibiotic Therapy.” Other nursing research grant recipients include Laurie Jung and Karen Rooney for “The Experience of Hope in a Mother of an Autistic Child”; and Antonina Shiver and Debra Ann Eckel for “A Comparative Study of Perceived Exercise Benefits and Barriers in Normal and Overweight 18- to 22-Year-Olds.”

Nurse Receives 2008 N.J. Governor’s Merit Award

Rutgers College of Nursing, Newark, N.J., Assistant Professor Linda Flynn received the 2008 New Jersey Governor’s Nursing Merit Award for Excellence as a Nurse Researcher at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, Princeton, on June 5. Flynn was honored for her research on how nurse staffing levels and work environment affect patient outcomes and nurse satisfaction and retention rates.

St. Joseph’s Announces Awards

Amy Casteline

Amy Casteline, nurse educator, ED, St. Joseph’s Wayne Hospital, Wayne, received the 2008 Achieving Clinical Excellence Nursing Award for clinical achievements and professional growth in bedside nursing.

Marie Van De Veire, Wayne site director of Nursing, St. Joseph’s Wayne Hospital, and Donna Devereaux, nurse manager, 4 West, present award to Danuta Tomusiak, 4 West; Mary Spigarelli, CCRN, ICU/CCU, receives her award from Joan Murphy, nurse manager, Critical Care.

Danuta Tomusiak, 4 West, received the Annual Kathleen Houlihan Recognition Award for Telemetry and Progressive Care. Mary Spigarelli, CCRN, ICU/CCU, received the Annual Ursula Cahsens Critical Care Excellence Award.

Dermatology Association Names President

Karrie Fairbrother, nurse educator, has been named president of the Dermatology Nurses Association, Mount Laurel, N.J. She will work to increase visibility of the organization and profession through the sharing of knowledge and expertise.

Nurses Recognized at Sarah Neuman Center

At Sarah Neuman Center for Healthcare and Rehabilitation in Mamaroneck, N.Y., during Nurse Recognition Day round-the-clock nurses were treated to lunch or dinner and presented with gifts in appreciation of their contributions. Local merchants also provided gifts in recognition of the compassionate care that is offered at the 300-bed nursing home and rehabilitation center.
